Let’s Not Repeat History is a interactive audio visual installation created to showcase the negative cyclical patterns in history. It was created as a speculative time capsule to be opened in the year 2121.
This piece captures US events through sound recordings and music accompanied by text. The audio is all original recordings from the corresponding event. The events highlighted aim to show viewers mistakes that were made in the past causing many people pain, trauma, and death. The issues continue to repeat in different forms and have yet to be resolved in 2021. I hope that in 2121, they have been solved. The categories covered include racism, war, and endangerment of schoolchilden, all issues that have evolved in one way of another, but unfortunatly are still present today. This is only a snippet of our history, but the installation serves as a reminder to the future generation to remember and learn from the past to ensure that this form of cyclical history does not repeat again.
Music has historically collided with current events. The cycles of history can be heard through the mood and context of each song, which I overlayed with news broadcasts or speeches. As you go around the piece, you continually hear hope, grief, joy, fear, and anger. You are transported to the events while you can read and learn about them in the “newspapers”. The papers also include written lyrics from each song so you can analyse and compare.
The violence occuring in the US during the Black Lives Matter movement as well as in Palestine prompted me to create this piece.
